The Best Prescription Drug for Fertility Problems
Fertility treatments have been a godsend for couples experiencing fertility troubles and having difficulty conceiving. There are many options to choose from including tubal surgery, in vitro fertilization (IVF), artificial insemination, and others. The most common infertility treatment, however, involves hormone regulation through fertility drugs. In fact, fertility drugs have become so effective that three out of every four couples eventually are able to perceive. Their only drawback is the cost of ivf treatments.
If you monitor the ivf Internet message boards, probably the most popular drug used for women with fertility problems is the drug Clomid or clomiphene citrate. This drub works by tricking the brain into thinking that the amount of estrogen in the bloodstream is too low. It causes the hypothalamus to release more of the hormone GnRH. This in turn causes the release of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH0 which work together to stimulate the ovary to produce estrogen and eggs.
There are numerous reasons why a woman might not be ovulating. In the case of those with fertility problems, the cause is probably due to their pituitary glands not producing enough FSH and LH at the right times in her menstrual cycle. If this is the reason, then there’s a good chance that Clomid can help the problem. If irregular ovulation is the only fertility related problem that a woman has, she has a one out of two chance of becoming pregnant within 6 months with Clomid.
In most cases, prior to prescribing the drug Clomid, the male’s semen is tested to make sure that the infertility problem really lies with the woman’s reproduction system instead of the male’s sperm. And even though Clomid is, by far, one of the best means of establishing ovulation, one should remember that it does come with possible side effects such as nausea, visual disruptions, possibilities of multiple births, and others.
The woman has to go through a number of drug cycles without conception for the method to be considered a failure. If after a number of treatments, the woman is still having trouble conceiving, the fertility specialist may recommend taking the next step which, in most cases, will be in vitro fertilization.
