Harmful Drinking, an Enabling Spouse, and Encouragement for Helpful Change and Successful Alcoholism Rehab
It took more than a few years but Emily at long last decided that she had it with her husband’s unhealthy and excessive drinking. She was weary from seeing Barry come home after 2:00 AM from drinking instead of spending time with her and their two daughters. She was also tired of the third DWI Barry recently got. Moreover she was sick of creating reasons for her spouse when he couldn’t show up for work on time due to his problems with drinking. In a similar manner she was apprehensive about the fact that their relationship was crumbling due to Barry’s hazardous and abusive drinking. And lastly she was worn-out from the uncertain financial jam into which he had placed his family due to his excessive and unhealthy drinking behavior.
When Abusive and Excessive Drinking Inspires a Person to do Something Productive About an Individual’s Drinking Problem
One morning when Emily was reflecting on what she could do about her husband’s abusive and hazardous drinking, she got to the point that she frankly had to do something constructive to cut into the damaging cycle of Barry’s abusive drinking behavior.
So she looked in the yellow pages under “alcohol rehabilitation” and discovered numerous treatment facilities that were all located less than forty-five miles away from where her husband and she lived.
Due to the fact that she didn’t know a great deal about these treatment centers, she finally determined that she needed to call some of them and ask some questions. When she called each rehab clinic she introduced herself and stated that Barry, her husband, was engaging in abusive and unhealthy drinking behavior. She also articulated that Barry, her spouse, had a fine health insurance program at his place of employment and that outpatient or residential alcohol rehab would be covered if a health care professional in the company health plan authorized the rehabilitation.
At one treatment clinic, Emily was astonished that she was able to converse directly with a counselor who suggested that she come to the treatment clinic to describe her husband’s careless and hazardous drinking behavior in much greater detail.
Emily Talks to a Healthcare Professional About Her Husband’s Excessive and Abusive Drinking
When Emily got to the rehab facility, she filled out some required forms and then after approximately five or ten minutes got to see a physician.
After listening to Emily talk about her husband’s abusive and excessive drinking, the healthcare professional in a compassionate but resolute manner told Emily how she probably played a role in her spouse’s careless drinking through the months and the years by rationalizing his drinking instead of letting him experience the consequences of his hazardous and excessive drinking behavior.
Emily Discovers She Has Been Enabling Her Husband’s Hazardous and Excessive Drinking
Stated another way, the physician told Emily that she may have been inadvertently enabling Barry’s negative drinking behavior. The physician also stressed the fact that even though Emily would not be able to control Barry’s conduct, with the support and guidance of the rehab team at the healthcare facility she would not only be able to learn how to stop contributing to Barry’s careless and abusive drinking but she could also learn how to motivate him to schedule an appointment at the rehabilitation clinic so that he could go over his abusive and hazardous drinking behavior with a therapist.
The good news was that after Emily explained this to Barry, and he saw that she meant business, Barry told her that he had been very alarmed by his careless and excessive drinking behavior and that he was somewhat relieved to hear that Emily wanted to do something constructive about his hazardous drinking behavior. As a result, he scheduled an appointment to see a doctor at the local alcohol rehabilitation center.
Barry Agrees to See a Healthcare Practitioner About His Excessive Drinking
While simply calling a rehab program does not ensure that a person’s unhealthy and abusive drinking behavior will end or that one’s warning signs of alcoholism or the alcohol abuse signs one exhibits will simply disappear, calling for an appointment is unmistakably an essential component in the rehabilitation process. And since Barry was serious about getting treatment for his drinking problems, the likelihood of a successful recovery was considerably increased.
